The thaw combined with a rainy weekend meant that the water level in the Tyne was high earlier this week when Colin Ashley walked near the bridge at Hexham. Colin says he has never seen the water running so fast.

Pictures of the heavy snowfall and frozen River Tyne at Chollerford, as the county continues to battle with subzero conditions. Photo credit Owen Humphreys/PA Wire

Weather experts have forecast that further sub-zero temperatures, which follow the coldest December in more than a decade, will last for around 10 days.

Temperatures have already dipped to -10C and could plummet to -15C later this week with the North East hit the hardest nationally.

Northumberland County Council produced a video (below) to raise awareness of the facilities available to people wanting to know more about their ancestors.

It was uploaded onto internet video sharing site YouTube and has got more than 12,000 hits.

Video: Recycling in Northumberland

A video has been launched by Northumberland County Council to help it meet demanding Government recycling targets.

The tutorial video (watch below) shows Northumberland County Council's new recycling centre in action and helps residents understand what can and can't be put into the recycling bin.

In Northumberland the council is responsible for collecting waste from more than 140,000 households as well as thousands of business premises.

Traditional music was on offer at the 57th Hexham Abbey Festival this weekend.

One of the country's oldest festivals, the packed programme included live performances of works by Mendelssohn, Tchaikovsky and Dvorak.

Choral music came from the Newcastle Sinfonietta, while the combined choirs of Hexham Abbey and Newcastle Cathedral, and local folk duo Landermason, also performed.

Wide-eyed and bushy tailed, this deer was surprised by a keen photographer.

Engineer Brewis Gair saw the roe deer at the corner of a cornfield near Hexham. The 51 year old said: "I don't know who was more surprised at being so close."
