A singing sensation from America is performing in Northumberland alongside vocalists from the county.

Northern Harmony - the world music singing ensemble from Vermont, USA - will spend four song-packed days in Hexham this week as part of their 12th UK tour.

Hosted by Queen's Hall Arts and Tynedale Community Choir, Northern Harmony will deliver workshops, perform in Hexham Abbey and enjoy a musical exchange with some of Northumberland's finest singers and traditional musicians.

The group, led by Larry Gordon and Patty Cuyler, requested a return visit to Hexham to sing in the "unparalleled acoustics of Hexham Abbey".

The concert - on Friday, March 12 - will also include students from local schools.
Northern Harmony's Larry Gordon said: "We are really excited by the strength of the group this year, with a good balance among all the parts.

"It is a very adventurous and plucky bunch of singers, completely unafraid to try new sounds and new ways of using their voices."

In the days leading up to the abbey concert, the choir are holding workshops with Hexham's young singers, and will spend a day in Queen Elizabeth High School, Hexham Middle School and Corbridge Middle School. Songs learned in these workshops will be performed by the school students as part of the Abbey concert.

Northern Harmony will also run an afternoon workshop in Allendale Village Hall on Saturday, March 13 for all interested singers, and the residency will end with a ceilidh in the hall later the same day.

The abbey concert is on at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £6 and £3 for concessions. The singing workshop in Allendale is on from 1.30pm to 5.30pm. Tickets cost £10 and £6 concessions. The ceilidh is on at 7.30pm with a shared supper beforehand - bring a contribution. Tickets cost £5, and £3 for concessions.
