Hexham is to mark St George's Day with a weekend of celebrations.

The Northumberland town's first festival celebrating St George will take place on Saturday, April 24, and Sunday, April 25, and will see the historic market town transformed into a sea of red and white.

Saturday sees an English themed farmers' market take place in the Market Place, while caterers and local restaurants will be serving traditional English food and drink.

Hexham Morris, the town's two Morris Dance teams, will host Morris master classes, as well as performing traditional dances.

The Forum Cinema will also show Morris - A Life With Bells On, a film about the life of a traditional Morris dancer. Nationally-acclaimed folk band Whapweasel are to perform at Wentworth Leisure Centre from 7.30pm-11.30pm on the Saturday, alongside a special English ceilidh, which is suitable for all the family.

On Sunday children can join in a dragon hunt around the grounds of Hexham Abbey to round off the weekend's events

A perfect opportunity for an event which will raise the profile of this beautiful market town. Bringing in people from afar is a tricky business, but I'm sure with the correct organisation this celebration weekend will provide a much needed boost to the town's economy and public profile.

Well hallelujah! We always celebrate St George's Day in memory of my dad as it was his Regimental Day. We gave up on Hexham a couple of years ago as not one single place was doing anything for it. Already booked to be in London this year but if Hexham can make it an annual event, we'll be here next year.
