Third series of Hexham Debates to begin
A series of debates is planned in Hexham.
The Hexham Debates were founded in 2007 by the Hexham Quaker Meeting and attracts audiences of between 100 and 250. It is currently in its third series with further debates planned for early 2010.
All debates take place on Saturdays from 11am to 12.30pm at St Mary's Centre, St Mary's RC Church, Hencotes. The first is on January 16 on the subject 'Britain and Afghanistan: is it worth it? Is it winnable?'
'Trident viewed with the eyes of a 21st century faith' is the title of the second on February 20. 'The roots of climate change in the violence of hubris ' is the subject of the debate on March 13.
On April 10, the title is 'Investigating the UK's role in the illegal detention and torture of terrorism suspects.'
'Making money for peace; reforming the money system to enable a steady-state economy' is the debate on May 15. On June 5, the discussion is led by Greg Philo, professor at Glasgow University and research director at the Glasgow Media Unit. The final session of the series is 'Challenging the legality of the use of force under international law' on July 10. Admission to all is free, with a collection.
