Hexham tree planting project could set new world record

Nature lovers in Northumberland could be part of a successful world record attempt by turning up for a massive tree planting event next month.

The bid to post a Guinness World Record for planting the most trees in one hour will take place at a site in the Causey Hill area of Hexham on December 5.

Volunteers are being invited to help plant 500 English Oak trees as part of the attempt, which is being promoted by the BBC and supported by the county council's neighbourhood services team.

The BBC's Tree O'Clock is an initiative dedicated to the celebration of trees and is taking place during National Tree Week.

The area between Bishopton Way and Causey Hill Way has been identified by council staff as one which would benefit from tree planting, and local people have been consulted about the plan.

Coun Alan Thompson, executive member for the environment at Northumberland County Council, said: "We selected the oak tree because it is one of our most prominent native trees. It is incredibly long lived and as it ages it hosts an ever-increasing number and range of wildlife within its boughs - adding to the biodiversity of the area.

"We hope that a large number of local residents will volunteer to help out. By doing so they will not only improve their local environment, but also be part of a very worthwhile record-breaking attempt."

The national aim is to plant a million trees between 11am and noon on December 5.

More information about the Hexham event is available by calling tree and woodlands officer John Alderson on (01434) 652417 or emailing John.Alderson@northumberland.gov.uk. People can also visit www.bbc.co.uk/breathingplaces/treeoclock.
