Hexham Girls get their revenge
Hexham Under 14 Girls 2, Cramlington Juniors 1
After losing to Cramlington in their first league game of the season Hexham were after revenge on Saturday. In fact Hexham took the game to Cramlington right from the first whistle and, playing with the slope, managed to pin the opposition back for most of the first half. Hexham in fact took the lead following another thunderbolt from Georgina Callf leaving the Cramlington keeper with no chance.
Roisin Edwards was making great ground down the flank and Kelly Loughhead, Marie McLoughlin and Rhiannan Castle were all finding space up the middle. Cramlington did however defend well, managing to keep Layla Zahawi quiet which very few teams manage to do for a full game. Against the run of play though Cramlington leveled the score before half time with a thunderbolt of their own.
Into the second half Cramlington came more and more into the game but the Hexham defence was standing firm. Particular mention should be made of Rachel Edwards who was playing her first game for Hexham at left back and did very very well. Ellie Harris and Bex Knight were tackling well but it was Girl of the Game Sophie Scott who stood out with two or three last ditch tackles, timed to perfection, preventing Cramlington from releasing the trigger.
Hexham managed to go 2-1 up following a fine Roisin Edwards corner which, following a goal mouth scramble, was poked home by Kelly Loughhead. Cramlington now had nothing to lose and really started to push forward.
Stephanie Chapman and Elizabeth Yates were doing their best to close down the midfield but Cramlington were starting to get their tails up. Hexham were now on a rear guard action and would have been in trouble but for another couple of fantastic saves from the ever reliable Hexham keeper, Hope Lowdon. There can be few better shot stoppers around.
Hexham managed to hang on until the final whistle to record a memorable victory against a strong Cramlington side. Hexham got the revenge that was richly deserved.
