Hexham Girls ease through to next round of Cup
Newbiggin Hall 1, Hexham Under 14 Girls 4
Playing on a pitch more akin to a paddy field Hexham played themselves into the next round of the Tesco Cup with a solid, battling performance against a tough Newbiggin Hall side. On the soaking wet surface flowing football was never going to be easy but Hexham did their level best to stay with the passing game that has stood them in such good stead this season.
Within the first couple of minutes however Newbiggin Hall had a great chance on goal but they hadn't banked on coming up against Hope Lowdon who once again came up trumps with a fantastic save.
Hexham then got into the game and took the lead half way through the first period when Kelly Loughhead slipped the ball through for Rhiannan Castle to score. Marie McLoughlin and Georgina Callf were holding their own in the midfield and Roisin Edwards was once again taking them on out wide.
The defence of Ellie Harris, Sophie Scott, Rachel Edwards and "girl of the game" Bex Knight were coping well with the Newbiggin Hall attack and it was a bit of a surprise to see Hexham going in at half time only 1-0 up.
Enya Mason made a welcome return to the team after a long lay-off through injury and settled into the action straightaway. Soon into the second half Hexham doubled their advantage when Rhiannan Castle slipped the ball through, only this time it was for Layla Zahawi to score. Almost in the very next attack however Hexham failed to clear their lines and Newbiggin Hall scrambled one back.
There were some crunching tackles going in as both sides tried to dominate the middle ground but Hexham gained the advantage with Stephanie Chapman in particular really getting stuck in.
Rachel Edwards then knocked a great ball into the area for Kelly Loughhead to score which was soon followed by some great passing movement resulting in a final pass through from Roisin Edwards for Kelly Loughhead to get her second of the game.
Another good win for Hexham which allows them to progress through to the next round.
