Hexham mart to host DEFRA representatives
DEFRA representatives are visiting a number of marts across the North East and Cumbria in the next couple of months to answer farmers' queries about new legislation and disease prevention measures.
The new series of livestock market visits kicks off today (October 1) at Acklington Mart in Northumberland. Officials will also be at Barnard Castle on October 6, Hexham on October 16, and Carlisle on October 21. Next month, the team will visit Wigton Mart on November 10 and Wooler the following day.
Meanwhile, a senior Defra official will also be at an NFU-hosted meeting for Cumbrian sheep farmers to discuss individual tagging and electronic tagging issues on October 21.
The event, at the Castle Green Hotel in Kendal, will be addressed by NFU livestock board chairman Alistair Mackintosh who farms at Ravenglass in Cumbria.
He said: "We have worked hard to reduce both the cost and regulatory burden on implementing sheep EID for farmers and Defra has worked with us.
"However, we do have to deal with the regulations that are being implemented from next year and it is important for all sheep farmers to meet with us and hear about our work so far and, more importantly, hear first hand from Defra how this regulation will be implemented in January."
