Alnwick Harrier David Kirkland strode to a comfortable victory in yesterday's Tynedale Jelly 10-mile race from Hexham to Ovingham.

In the overcast and showery conditions, a group of five soon broke away from the 530-strong field with Morpeth's Kristian Forster the first to lose contact after two miles.

Kirkland made his bid for victory on a downhill stretch after five miles with only Heaton's James Buis covering the break for a brief spell.

Kirkland extended his advantage to 39secs at the finish line with Buis finishing in second place.

With Paul Waterston in 12th and Phil Walker (14th) the leading veterans to finish, backing up Forster in fifth, Morpeth took the team title.

Elswick's Alison Dargie was the first lady, finishing in 53rd position overall. Heaton's Jo Zoppi finished second with Tynedale's Joanne Lee the leading veteran in third.

Heaton won the team event. The first three men and women also took the medals in the incorporated North Eastern Counties' Championship.
