Hexham marine to be honoured
Tyneside Royal Marine reserves are to be honoured today for their work in Afghanistan.
The Royal Marines Reserve Tyne will hold its medal ceremony, which will see marine David Thompson, 26, from Hexham, Northumberland and marine Phil Evans, 29, from Whitley Bay, North Tyneside, honoured.
The pair have both recently returned from Afghanistan after a six-month tour with the 45 Commando Royal Marines from Arbroath.
In addition to the two operational medals which will be given out, other members of the unit will also step forward to receive their long service and good conduct medals.
RMR Tyne's commanding officer, Colonel Philip Samson, said: "This is going to be a really memorable evening for many of our marines.
"It's also an opportunity for us to show the Tyneside people what we do and to welcome them to our headquarters.
"I hope that as many as possible will take the opportunity to come along and chat with the men to hear all about their experiences and what it means to be a marine, while continuing to work in a civilian job."
We'd like to hear from you. Send your stories, pics and videos to northumberland@ncjmedia.co.uk
