Record entries for Hexham point-to-point
The Haydon stages the penultimate fixture of the Northern Area point-to-point season at Hexham racecourse tomorrow with a record 187 entries on the seven-race programme which starts at 2pm.
Admission costs ã8 per person or ã10 with a race card and early arrivals can enjoy pony racing contests from 1pm.
Hexham trainer David Carr's two-horse yard has the best strike rate in the North this term with eight winners from only 11 runners, all ridden by stable jockey Andrew Richardson.
Coastley provided the latter with a first success under Rules when battling back to collar Athoss near the line in a Perth Hunter chase on Thursday, and Ardnaclancy can round off a memorable campaign by landing the Haydon and North Tyne Members race.
The two-and-a-half mile Open Maiden race for four, five, six and seven year-olds has 24 entries and is a potential minefield for punters with a quartet of hunt racing newcomers up against more experienced rivals.
Killiney Present shaped well when fourth at Corbridge last month and can go close with a more fluent round of jumping, while Dontpassgo should be fairly straight after his come back outing after Mosshouses.
Of the others, Reg Makin's runners always merit respect and any market moves for the un-raced Yar Patrick must be noted.
The three-and-a-quarter Open Maiden Race looks another competitive affair on paper and In To Win is fancied to come up trumps for Freya Hartle.
Gallant Girl is a danger if reproducing last week's run behind Overjoyed at Aspatria, and Look Out for the Canontess who might well have won at the same meeting had she not unseated Gillon Crow two out.
Former Irish pointer Risk Assesment had just taken the measure of Miss Teeny Bash at Mosshouses when left clear by the latter's last fence form and the Bill Hughes-trailed gelding had the scope to follow-up under Andrew Richardson in the Restricted Race. Other recent Maiden winners in the field include Tomopolly, Knoxhill, Archie and Witch Power.
Feature event on the card is the mixed open race which has a quality entry list of 35 horses.
Veteran Behaving badly remains in great heart and lifted his career tally to 10 at Aspatria, Dr Hellier stayed on well when third in a recent Hexham Maiden Hunter chase and the Comeback king, Lord Who has won two of his last three starts in Open Company since severing an artery on his seasonal debut at Kelso.
My selection is ex-chaser, Rayshan who probably needs a strong pace to produce his best and is the value bet to give Rose Dobbin a 100th career winner under all codes.
Old Rolla ridden by Kelly Bryson at Mosshouses can strike again in the MPPA club members race from course winners Leading Peral and Adlolphus.
The 26 entries for the concluding Intermediate Race are headed by My Old Piano. His partner Tom Greenall currently leads the Men's National Jockeys Championship on 40 winners after a four-timer at Garthorpe last Sunday.
His main rival is Risky Rhythm who is still on the upgrade and quickened up nicely on the home straight to win by a dozen lengths at Aspatria.
The promising Qollioure, a no runner in a Perth Bumber on Thursday, is better than this season's form figures of F3 might suggest, while My Wee Woman merits consideration if the going turns soft.
