Funeral of Hexham murder suspect takes places this week
The funeral of a murder suspect found hanging in his prison cell will take place this week.
Daniel Johnson, who was accused of killing Stephen Thomas Philipson, at a block of flats in Hexham, Northumberland, died last week.
The 23-year-old, who was due to appear at Newcastle Crown Court on June 22 to make a plea to the charge of murder, was found hanging in his cell at Durham Prison during the early hours of Monday morning.
His funeral will take place at St Andrew's Church in Lamesley, Gateshead, at 1.15pm, on Friday, followed by cremation at West Road Crematorium, in Newcastle.
A death notice placed by Daniel's family, of Birtley, Gateshead, reads: "It is with much sorrow that Daniel sadly passed away on Monday, May 18. Daniel was a gentle and loving soul, who brought joy and happiness to everyone's life he touched and who in return was much loved by his fiancee Catriona, parents Phillip and Gillian, sister Rebecca, grandmother Enid, his family and everyone who knew him."
Daniel, of Hexham, was arrested after Mr Philipson, was found with stab wounds to his neck at the Excelsior Buildings in the Battle Hill area of the town, on the afternoon of Friday, March, 20. The 37-year-old was taken to hospital by paramedics but he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Both Johnson and Mr Philipson lived in the two-storey block of flats. A post-mortem examination revealed Mr Philipson had died from stab wounds to his neck. A knife was recovered at the scene and Daniel was later charged with one count of murder.
He was remanded in custody after appearing before magistrates.
Daniel's death is not being treated as suspicious, and an inquest has been opened and adjourned. An investigation will also be carried out by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman .
