Hexham General chemo service to be extended
A chemotherapy service at Hexham General Hospital is to be extended after proving popular with patients.
The nurse-led service has moved from outpatients to a larger area in the hospital's Ward 1, while from April it will offer its services four days a week to prevent people from Tynedale having to travel to Newcastle or North Tyneside.
The unit has appointed two additional qualified nurses to support the demand and they will join the team in April.
Cancer nurse specialist Yvonne Smith said: "We provide a comfortable and friendly environment for our patients where they can feel they are treated as individuals. It is saving patients from travelling large distances, which can be daunting when they are perhaps not feeling their best."
Most patients have so preferred to get treatment in communal areas where they can share experiences with other patients, but there are also single rooms for those who prefer those who prefer privacy.
Donations have allowed the unit to employ a complementary therapist one day a week to provide treatments such as reflexology.
