Tynedale stroll to cup win

Tynedale made progress in the EDF Energy Trophy with third-round victories over minnows Wadebridge Camels.

In atrocious conditions at Corbridge, Tom Borthwick's Tynedale team of mostly second-string players and young prospects secured a comfortable 39-5 victory that booked their place in the fourth round of the competition.

The Cornish side, who play their rugby in the seventh tier of the rugby pyramid in the Western Counties West League, conceded five tries in the first half as Ben Duncan and Stuart Johnson notched two scores each.

Jamie Murray, substitute Grant Rastall and Charlie Ingall, on his first team debut, widened the margin with two conversions added for good measure.

Wadebridge scored a last minute consolation on the full-time whistle when Olly Hawkes scored an excellent try.

But it was an easy day's work for a team that has won their last 33 competitive games at home.

Director of rugby John Shotton said: "I didn't think the game was going to be played. The conditions were atrocious and that obviously had a big bearing on the game.

"I don't think it would be doing Wadebridge any disservice to say that we could have run in around 100 points on a dry surface.

"But they stuck at it and you can never take these things for granted.

"Staying in National Two is the obvious priority for us but the Trophy allows the coach Tom Borthwick to have a look at other players and some of the younger lads. They all made their case against Wadebridge."
