Hexham Woolworths closes

Woolworths in HexhamSeven Woolworths stores across the North East closed yesterday.

Stores in Northumberland, Tyne and Wear, County Durham and Stockton were trading throughout the day, with further closures expected on January 2 and 5.

Everything including fixtures and fittings was being sold at discount prices at the stores in Alnwick, Hexham and Morpeth, Northumberland.

Stores in Houghton-le-Spring, Stanley, Stockton on Tees and Whitley Bay also closed last night.

Administrator Deloitte has held talks with other retailers to take on the leases of around 300 stores.

It also hopes to sell off the Ladybird children's clothes and Chad Valley toys brands.

A spokeswoman said: "We are considering every offer that comes to the table."

Woolworths' longest trading branch in Croydon, London, has survived since 1912, seeing off the Depression, two world wars and numerous recessions.

On Friday, around 200 more stores will close for the final time, and on January 5, the last 200 will stop trading.
