Project to boost fathers in Northumberland
A new project is being launched in Northumberland to get fathers more involved in family life.
Northumberland County Council has come together with the charity Children North East Fathers Plus to the project that aims to involve fathers in ante and post natal services, nurseries, children's centres and schools.
The project is inspired by research which shows that, though most formal support is targeted at mothers, when fathers are positively involved in their children's lives it leads to improved performance at schools and increased confidence.
The council's executive director of children's services Trevor Doughty said: "The fact is that fathers have a huge impact on the achievement, health and well being of their children - This network gives services across the county a great opportunity to find ways of meeting the needs of fathers and male carers so we can improve the lives of children and young people in Northumberland."
David Van Der Velde, service manager for Children North East Fathers Plus, added: "It is great to see another area linking up with the national Including Men networks to support culture change in services.
"The Northumberland network has already attracted over 30 managers and workers from across the county and will support workers to make their services more father friendly."
