A couple had a lucky escape yesterday when their car overturned on a country road.

The accident happened at about 3.10pm at the junction of the Military Road and the Stagshaw Roundabout near Hexham.

A 60-year-old male driver and his female passenger, 59, suffered minor cuts and bruises.

Police and an ambulance crew attended and both casualties were taken to Hexham General Hospital after receiving treatment at the roadside from paramedics.

A police spokeswoman said: "At 3.10pm police and the ambulance service were called to reports of an overturned vehicle. On arrival, police found a 60-year-old man and a 59-year-old woman who had suffered minor injuries and both were taken to hospital for a routine check-up."

Investigations into the crash were continuing last night.
