Imprisoned in Hexham
Northumberland artist Julia Barton will be confronting the concept of imprisonment in her latest exhibition at Queens Hall Arts Centre in Hexham.
'Confinement' is her site-specific installation that reflects upon the confined and claustrophobic space of the prison cell. The cage-like work mimics the exact dimensions of a cell, whilst the floor space is threaded with creeping buttercup.
The analogy between prisoner and weed is made through images on the walls of the gallery.
Her work is supported by Essex-based Penny Brice, who has recorded testimonies from prisoners from a young offenders centre.
Julia Barton has previously been commissioned by the National Health Service, private historic trusts, the National Trust, schools and garden festivals.
The exhibition is free and runs from September 6 until October 11 in Gallery One of the Queen's Hall on Beaumont Street.
