There were plenty of smiling faces at Queen Elizabeth High School in Hexham, where the overall pass rate cleared 98%, with 57% of all grades being A or B.

Among the high achievers was 18-year-old Becci Best, who got A grades in psychology, biology and drama. Before furthering her academic studies in Manchester she will be taking a gap year that will include teaching in Fiji and travelling in South East Asia.

She said: "I am really pleased - I looked on the Internet this morning to see if I had got in to university, but the results were a surprise because I didn't think I had done that well.

"I worked really hard but the pressure is off now and it was definitely worth it."

The year group also produced a number of future doctors and medical professionals, with Will Briggs and Hannah Barrett, both 18, two of the students set to study medicine. Both got three A grades in their results.

Will, who is going to Sheffield University, said: "I had been expecting the results but it is still a relief to have it in your hand - I have been working towards it for three years.

"The long term plan is to be a brain surgeon - I did work experience in that and it was absolutely fantastic. It was a bit gory but really good."

One group of friends, Rosie Dammers, 17, Laura Cooke, 18, and Katie Hannat, 18, were all also smiling yesterday having each achieved three grade A results.

Headteacher at the school Tony Webster said he was "really pleased" with the results.

He said: "It is wonderful that students continue to achieve outstanding results year on year.

"These results reflect the all round strength of the school and the quality of teaching and learning in the sixth form."

Mr Webster also highlighted the students who had excelled in some of the newer courses offered at the school, which include qualifications in performing arts, hospitality and catering and sports and exercise science.

Among those performing well in those areas were Natalie Hill, Kirsty Bell, Matthew Thompson and Thomas Cant.
