Golf rivals in gear for big title decider
THE venues for this season's major men's Journal golf events, De Vere Slaley Hall and Hexham, go head-to-head this evening in the fixture which will decide the Hadrian League title.
The last round of matches has thrown up a dramatic showdown expected to attract a sizeable gallery (tee-off 5.30pm).
Slaley Hall, who will host The Journal Champion of Champions tournament on Sunday September 14, have a one-point lead at the top of the table.
They are away to second-placed Hexham, who hosted The Journal Dream Team match against the Hadrian League in early July.
Slaley have 108 points to Hexham's 107 and League secretary Colin Mussett, from the Stocksfield club, said: "If Hexham win the match, they take the title but a draw or better will do it for Slaley. What a finish!"
Each side have county players absent with Hexham's Sean Heads playing for England in the home internationals in Essex and Slaley's Kris Gray competing in the North of England Youth Championships at Middlesbrough.
Northumberland captain Kevin Cademy-Taylor, the Hadrian League captain, plays for Slaley. He said: "I would say the average age of our team is around 40 and Hexham's is somewhere between 25 and 30 so it is going to be an interesting contest between youth and experience."
